I HAVE AN EMBARRASSING GUY-PROBLEM!
I get erections all the time. Is this normal? Mike answers.

by Michael Ross

HEY MIKE! I have a certain “guy problem,” which is really embarrassing. I get erections all the time. I not only get them while talking to girls, but—I’m ashamed to admit—even while taking a shower during gym class. Is this normal? Or am I struggling with some kind of sexual perversion?

—Name Withheld

During puberty and the early teen years, guys get lots of erections, often for no reason at all. It’s totally normal, so don’t freak out. And chances are, they’re not noticeable to other people.

Getting them at awkward moments can feel devastating—especially when you’re in the locker room, wearing nothing but your birthday clothes! But understand this: (1) You’re not alone; it happens to many guys. (2) You’re not weird. And (3) you’re certainly NOT perverted or homosexual. God did not create you that way.

The fact is, your body is racing with hormones as well as all kinds of emotions and desires. For the next few years, it will seem as if the slightest thought or activity can cause an erection. The best thing you can do is ignore it and concentrate on something else until it passes. logo
