IS SHE TOO OLD FOR ME?
She's three years older. She's heading to college. What should I do? Get Mike's advice.

by Michael Ross

HEY MIKE! I'm interested in a girl who is nearly three years older than I. Is that too much of an age difference? I’ve had a great friendship with her for a couple years. But now that she’s heading off to college, I’m afraid that she might become interested in other guys. Also, since I just started high school, I’d like to begin dating her after I graduate.

Honestly, I’d reconsider taking your friendship to another level.

I know you’re not asking her to marry you. But if you pursue something more, you could open yourself to some serious disappointments. First, the two of you are at very different places in your lives. She’s starting a college adventure and, yes, probably will become interested in guys her age. Second, it sounds as if you’d have a long-distance relationship with her, which presents all kinds of challenges. Third, would it be right to ask her to wait until you graduate from high school?

My advice: Stick with friendship. In the meantime, get to know girls your age. (Go out in groups.) And if you’re committed to dating her after you graduate, don’t compromise now. logo
